Here are some ways I've globalized
the teaching of standards in my classroom:
Common Core State Standards - Literacy - Reading: Literature - Grade 9-10
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.3
Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme.
Integration of Global Education:
●Students can recognize that world cultures use similar themes, plot lines, and characterization in their myths, legends, and folktales.
●Students can compare and contrast their perspective with others, and integrate their own and others’ viewpoints to construct a new one.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies:
●Students will explore a myth, legend, or folktale from their World Region, and analyze how the main character has changed and advanced the plot and theme.
●Students will examine what this myth, legend, or folktale means to them, their community, and their own nation.
●Students will discuss with other students from the World Region their myth, legend, or folktale originated the themes, plot lines, and characterization.
●Students will compare and contrast their own perspectives with the students from their World Region what the myth, legend, or folktale means to them, their communities, and the world.
Informal Outcome Assessments:
●Students will be able to complete Unit 5’s Reading Mythology: Analyzing Global Myths, Legends, and Folktales.
●Students will be able to discuss and communicate effectively and compassionately with a diverse audience.

●Students can write, record, and publish a podcast of a review of their American “Immigrant” novels, demonstrating command of standard English grammar and usage when speaking.
●Students can identify, examine, and address an important, relevant global and local phenomena.
Specific Lesson Plan Modifications for Global Competencies:
●Students will read, examine, and critique a novel detailing and/or connected to the American “Immigrant” experience.
●Students will identify, question, and address the current American “Immigrant” experience.
●Students will analyze what the book might mean to themselves, their communities, and the world.
●Students will effectively communicate verbally, utilizing technology in an artistic and savvy way.
