All About Me
Hello! I have been teaching World Literature, Speech, Drama, and Journalism at Veritas High School, a small public charter school focused on college prep, for the past ten years. After graduating in 2006 from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, I taught English for two years in Samoa, a small island in the South Pacific. Now at Veritas, I am responsible for creating the school’s annual Folk Fair, the Cultural Exchange Project, and promoting global connectedness and education. I was awarded the Fund for Teachers Fellowship where I traveled through Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia, and the Fulbright Japan-U.S Teacher Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development, creating a global World Literature class over the years. Through an Education First training tour, I visited Spain in Spring of 2017. I managed and led the school’s first international trip in May of 2017 to China! I was a recipient of the 2017 Fellowship Award from the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation. This Global Education Guide is the result of my receiving of the Teachers for Global Classrooms opportunity, a fellowship provided by the U.S. Department of State and IREX. With this program I have completed a graduate-level course on Global Education, experienced a symposium with like-minded educators and administrators in Washington D.C., and traveled to Indonesia in the summer of 2018.
My husband and I have been married for three years and we have four foster children. We love to camp and hike and explore Wisconsin. We live in Milwaukee.
My hobbies include writing (I'm trying oh so hard to get published!), reading, traveling, cooking, and playing volleyball. A couple of my favorite books are This Much I Know Is True by Wally Lamb, Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. My favorite movies are The Lion King, Wizard of Oz, Mommy Dearest, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure. My favorite donut? A good ol' Long John with vanilla frosting. One of my favorite places I've traveled to is Greece. Athens is AMAZING! An interesting tidbit about myself is that my sister and I went to Australia with Oprah, winning the trip on her Ultimate Viewers episode. My favorite foods are steak tacos, BLTs, and feta cheese.
My main objective is to take my teaching to the next innovative level, having my students collaborate with people from around the earth to learn about and improve their communities and environments.
